Stories of Help

Housing & Transportation

Early in 2006, Friends In Deed assisted a senior couple with funds to move into a senior facility in Ypsilanti. The wife was in a wheelchair and the husband also had mobility problems. Using the bus for transportation to get to the doctor, run errands and go grocery shopping was very difficult. Later in the year, FID was again able to assist this couple by providing them with a donated van. Their note of appreciation expresses how meaningful this assistance was to them.

“We would like to thank you for all your help in our time of need. It's a mighty thing to see God's great army at work. We have been praying for help and we try ourselves to help others in sharing and encouragement and pray God's blessing on Friends In Deed ministries and all who contribute and receive. Thank you so much again. We are so very happy to be able to go to the store and doctors appointments and other things you have made possible.”

Car Repair

A 50 year old woman contacted the FID office requesting help with brake repair. This repair was important since the car was a necessity for her job cleaning houses. Friends In Deed was able to pay for her brake repair so she could move forward in her plan for the future. She was attending Washtenaw Community College in order to get a better job because, as she told our caseworker, she would not be able to continue cleaning houses as she got older.

Rent Assistance

A 22 year old single mom with a new baby called for rent help after incurring unplanned moving expenses. She was forced to move quickly and without prior notice after the apartment she was living in went into foreclosure and the water was turned off. FID was able to verify the situation and responded immediately with rent assistance.

Utility Assistance

A family with two school-age children was assisted with a DTE bill which prevented their gas and electric from being shut off. The husband was out of work for a year because of cancer and his wife needed to stay home to care for him. They are now receiving Social Security which will help meet their expenses.

Furniture

Friends In Deed volunteers delivered furniture to a 40 year old disabled woman. Among the items delivered were a sofa donated by Tyner Furniture and chairs from American House. Upon receipt of the items, the woman contacted the FID office to express her enthusiasm for the furniture and appreciation for FID.
